Gucci sells ‘Indian kurta’ at Rs 2.55 lakh; netizens say ‘no thanks’

]

Italian fashion giant Gucci is selling a kurta worth Rs 2,55,629 ($3,500). This kurta is described as a ‘floral embroidery organic linen kaftan’ on the Gucci website. This is an off-white kurta featuring floral embroidered yolk, a neck opening with a self-tie tassel, and patchwork on the sleeves.

As this experiment by Gucci went viral, Indians were far from pleased and one user said that kurtas like these were available at $5 in India. Another user commented that they won’t shell out more than Rs 200 for a kurta like this.

From “Gucci selling ‘Indian kurta’ in the price of gold” to “our Ashokbhai can make this for Rs 500”, here’s how netizens reacted

This, however, is not the first time that the Italian fashion behemoth has come under fire for cultural appropriation. Back in 2019, Sikhs decried Gucci for its ‘Indy Turban’, which cost almost $800 each due to the importance of the turban in Sikh traditions.

Sikh Coalition, an advocacy group called Gucci out for cultural appropriation and tweeted, “@gucci @Nordstrom The Sikh turban is not just a fashion accessory, but it’s also a sacred religious article of faith. We hope more can be done to recognize this critical context. #appropriation”

American reality TV star Kim Kardashian had also faced the wrath of the netizens for wearing long hoop earrings featuring the ‘Om’ symbol in a photoshoot. The ‘Keeping up with the Kardashians’ star was accused of cultural appropriation as ‘Om’ is extremely sacred, as per Hinduism.

Gucci sells Indian kurta for Rs 2.5 lakh, and desi Twitter can’t keep calm

]

Many people also pointed out that the dress by Gucci isn’t even a kaftan.

Fashion house Gucci is selling a dress closely resembling the Indian kurta for an exorbitant Rs 2.5 lakh and the Desi Twitter has a lot to say about it. With this, kurta joins Indian mainstays such as turmeric latte, desi khatiya and pranayam, which have been appropriated by the West.

Yes, one desi user suddenly came across the international brand selling an ivory white kurta, which the brand mislabelled as ‘kaftan’ for $3500. Soon, the screenshot of the product started a conversation online with desi folks baffled and unimpressed.

“Gucci selling an Indian kurta for 2.5 lakhs ? I’ll get the same thing for 500 bucks,” the Twitter user wrote while sharing the images.

“Crafted from organic linen, this kaftan is enriched with a floral embroidery and self-tile tassels,” description of the Made in Italy product read on the luxury brand’s website.

However, this is not the only kaftan the famous brand has to offer, and believe it or not, this is not the most expensive option in the category. The website lists many kaftans of various lengths and patterns, some even made of silk, with prices starting off at $1300 going up to $4200!

Desi folks couldn’t believe the exorbitant price, calculating how many dozens of outfits they can get for the same amount. Many also wondered who will shell out so much of money to buy the product. Some also pointed out that the product isn’t a kaftan and should be best described as a kurta or a kurti.

Here’s how netizens reacted to it:

However, it’s not the first time that an international brand tried to sell everyday south-Asian garment at a high price. In 2018, Zara created a huge buzz online after it started selling a women’s skirt that reminded everyone of lungi.

‘It is Indian kurta’: Gucci’s Kaftan worth ₹2.5 lakh sparks Twitter chatter

]

A new kaftan collection by Gucci is the latest source of Twitter chatter, all because many are calling the outfits costlier versions of Indian kurtas. The brand’s latest collection has traditional necklines and tassels which reminded many of the classic kurtas worn by Indian women.

Tweeple didn’t hold back while sharing their reactions to this new range by the luxury fashion house. Many are even sharing screenshots of Gucci’s website where the price of these outfits is listed as $3,500, approximately ₹2.5 lakh.

“Gucci selling an Indian kurta for 2.5 lakhs? I’ll get the same thing for 500 bucks,” wrote a Twitter user while sharing the screenshots:

People had a lot to say on the post. “My mom can make the same design. Shall I start selling those to Gucci?” wrote a Twitter user. “We can get this in Gariahat or New Market (both located in Kolkata) in less than 1k,” shared another. “You can get two of these for 500. Hell, I don’t even buy kurtas like these because they are not my style. 3,500 dollars for THIS?!” expressed a third.

Here’s how some others reacted:
