Going for their third straight Rolex 24 victory, the Wayne Taylor Racing No. 10 Acura has surged to the front with six hours left.

Kevin Magnussen is second in the No. 01 Chip Ganassi Caddy, followed by the No. 31 Cadillac and the No. 60 Acura.

8:40 a.m. | Lead-lap battles throughout Rolex field

It’s not just the marquee DPi class that’s producing close competition through 17 hours of the Rolex 24.

Of the five car classes, only LMP3, where the No. 74 Ligier JS enjoys a four-lap lead, is a potential lopsided affair.

DPi, LMP2, GTLM and GTD all feature multiple cars on the lead lap.

Overall, it remains a five-car tussle among DPi machines. As the Rolex crossed the 17-hour mark, the No. 10 Acura of Wayne Taylor Racing (Helio Castroneves aboard) and the No. 01 Cadillac of Chip Ganassi Racing (Renger van der Zander driving) are nose-to-tail and about 15 seconds ahead of the other DPi chasers.

Other class leaders:

LMP2: No. 18 Oreca (Kyle Tilley driving).

LMP3: No. 74 Ligier (Oliver Askew)

GT Le Mans: No. 4 Corvette (Tommy Milner)

GT Daytona: No. 21 Ferrari (Daniel Serra).

7:40 a.m. | Still a 5-way battle on lead lap

Little change in the running order atop the scoring pylon at Daytona as the Rolex 24 reaches the two-thirds mark at Hour 16.

Chip Ganassi’s No. 01 Cadillac DPi continues to lead, with Renger van der Zande aboard and 4 seconds clear of the second-place No. 10 Acura of Wayne Taylor Racing, which is being wheeled by Helio Castroneves.

Rounding out the top five cars that remain on the lead lap: Dane Cameron in the No. 60 Acura DPi of Meyer-Shank Racing, Pipo Derani in the No. 31 Cadillac of Action Express, and Kamui Kobayashi in the No. 48, Action Express' other entry.

Other class leaders:

LMP2: The No. 8 Oreca (Gabriel Aubry driving).

LMP3: No. 74 Ligier (Oliver Askew).

GT Le Mans: No. 4 Corvette (Tommy Milner).

GT Daytona: No. 57 Mercedes-AMG (Maro Engel).

6:40 a.m. | Ganassi’s Cadillac up front, 5 on lead lap

As sunrise approached Sunday morning, and 15 hours deep into the 2021 Rolex 24, five prototypes remained on the lead lap as the endurance classic was shaping up to be as spirited and competitive as promised.

Chip Ganassi Racing’s No. 01 Cadillac DPi was up front, followed by the No. 60, with longtime NASCAR racer AJ Allmendinger aboard the Meyer-Shank Racing Acura.. Mike Conway was next in the No. 31 Caddy of Action Express Racing then two-time winner Kamui Kobayashi in the other Action Express (No. 48) entry, and former IndyCar star Helio Castroneves in the No. 10 Acura.

The next closest DPi was the No. 55 Mazda, two laps down with Oliver Jarvis at the wheel.

Jimmie Johnson wheeled another double shift around midnight in the No. 48, leading through his first shift and slipping to second in his next.

Other leaders at the 15-hour mark:

LMP2: Gabriel Aubry in the No. 08 Oreca.

LMP3: Spencer Pigot in the No. 74 Ligier.

GT Le Mans: Connor De Phillippi in the No. 25 BMW.

GT Daytona: Philip Ellis in the No. 57 Mercedes-AMG.

12:40 a.m. | Johnson returns, keeps No. 48 team in front

Kamui Kobayashi entered Sunday morning as the Rolex 24 leader, and Jimmie Johnson has kept the No. 48 Ally Racing Cadillac in front.

Johnson, taking his second turn behind the wheel, was running about one second faster than Renger van der Zande in the No. 01 Chip Ganassi Cadillac.

Cadillac occupies four of the top five spots; Alexander Rossi, in the No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura D, sits in third position.

Three cars have retired from the competition — the Nos. 29, 20 and 81 ORECAs, all in the LMP2 class.

For more overnight updates, you can follow IMSA’s live leaderboard at www.imsa.com/scoring.

Other class leaders:

LMP2: Thomas Merrill in the No. 11 ORECA

LMP3: Stevan McAleer in the No. 6 Duqueine

GT Le Mans: Antonio Garcia in the No. 3 Corvette

GT Daytona: Matteo Cressoni in the No. 21 Ferrari

11:40 p.m. | Kobayashi drives No. 48 to the lead before pit-stop

Going for his third straight Rolex 24 overall win, Kamui Kobayashi drove around the No. 01 Chip Ganassi Cadillac and put the No. 48 Ally Racing machine into the lead just after 11 p.m. He pulled away from Renger van der Zande before hitting pit-road, which thrust the Ganassi machine back to the lead.

Alexander Rossi and the No. 10 Wayne Taylor Acura is second, followed by AJ Allmendinger in the No. 60 DPi. Kobayashi is now fourth, 42 seconds back.

Other class leaders:

LMP2: Thomas Merrill in the No. 11 ORECA

LMP3: Stevan McAleer in the No. 6 Duqueine

GT Le Mans: Antonio Garcia in the No. 3 Corvette

GT Daytona: Nicklas Nielsen in the No. 21 Ferrari

10:40 p.m. | Caution, frantic restart shuffles leaderboard again

After over three hours of green flag racing, a full course yellow was finally thrown just after the 10 p.m. hour.

That bunched the field back up and led to a frantic restart that saw Loic Duval overtake Scott Dixon on the restart and put the No. 5 Mustang Sampling Cadillac in front. However, after further review, IMSA ruled that Duval jumped the restart and was forced to serve a drive-through penalty.

The No. 48 Cadillac DPi briefly held the lead after that, but Dixon has since overtaken that car to go back out in front. Kamui Kobayashi in the No. 48 DPi is now second followed by the Wayne Taylor No. 10 Acura.

Other class leaders:

LMP2: Thomas Merrill in the No. 11 ORECA

LMP3: Lance Willsey in the No. 33 Ligier

GT Le Mans: Tommy Milner in the No. 4 Corvette

GT Daytona: Patrick Long in the No. 16 Porsche 911

9:40 p.m. | Rolex 24 leaderboard continues to change as long run continues

Drivers in all five Rolex 24 classes continue to battle for spots as a 3-hour green flag run continues.

Sebastien Bourdais is the overall leader in the No. 5 Cadillac. Scott Dixon and the No. 01 Chip Ganassi machine is second, followed by the Wayne Taylor No. 10 and the No. 48 Cadillac.

Bourdais' lead is up to nearly 11-seconds over Dixon and 47-seconds over fourth-place Mike Rockenfeller.

Other class leaders:

LMP2: Matthew Bell in the No. 11 ORECA

LMP3: Scott Andrews in the No. 74 Ligier.

GT Le Mans: Alexander Sims in the No. 4 Corvette

GT Daytona: Klaus Bachler in the No. 16 Porsche 911

8:40 p.m. | Dixon, Bourdais battle for lead

Cadillac holds the top three spots in the Rolex 24 At Daytona as Scott Dixon and Sebastien Bourdais battle for the outright lead.

Bourdais inherited the lead from countryman Tristan Vautier in the No. 5 Cadillac DPi, but Dixon pulled ahead just before race’s fifth hour drew to a close. Dixon, in the No. 01 Cadillac, is aiming for his fifth career Rolex victory.

Mike Rockenfeller in the No. 48 Cadillac sits third, and Helio Castroneves is fourth in the No. 10 Acura. Castroneves was involved in a bus stop wreck less than four hours into last year’s event.

Other class leaders through three hours:

LMP2: Matthew Bell in the No. 11 ORECA

LMP3: Scott Andrews in the No. 74 Ligier.

GT Le Mans: Alexander Sims in the No. 4 Corvette

GT Daytona: Andrea Caldarelli in the No. 1 Lamborghini

7:40 p.m. | French Cadillac team maintains top spot

Tristan Vautier, one-third of the all-French No. 5 Cadillac DPi team, maintains the lead at the Rolex 24 at Daytona.

Cadillacs hold three of the top four spots. Kevin Magnussen, in the No. 01 Cadillac, sits about three seconds off the pace. Ricky Taylor breaks up the Cadillac stranglehold in third place in the No. 10 Acura.

Chase Elliott made way for Mike Conway after about an hour. The Rolex rookie, and 2020 NASCAR Cup Series champion, exited the car in seventh.

Other class leaders through three hours:

LMP2: Tristan Nunez in the No. 11 ORECA

LMP3: Spencer Pigot in the No. 74 Ligier.

GT Le Mans: Jordan Taylor in the No. 3 Corvette

GT Daytona: Indy Dontje in the No. 57 Mercedes

6:40 p.m. |Chase Elliott makes Rolex 24 debut

Chase Elliott took over for Felipe Nasr in the No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac shortly after 6 p.m. It’s the defending NASCAR Cup Series' champion’s first stint in the Rolex 24.

Elliott’s currently seventh, 16-seconds behind race-leader Tristan Vautier in the No. 5 Cadillac DPi.

Other class leaders through three hours:

LMP2: Paul-Loup Chatin in the No. 18 ORECA

LMP3: Wayne Boyd in the No. 33 Ligier.

GT Le Mans: Nick Tandy in the No. 4 Corvette

GT Daytona: Kyle Kirkwood in the No. 14 Lexus

5:40 p.m. | Nasr stays up front after 2 hours

A caution flag bunched the field together midway through the second hour, but after returning to green, the man up front was still Felipe Nasr in the No. 31 Cadillac DPi. However, he played some give-and-take with Renger van der Zande in the No. 01 Caddy owned by Chip Ganassi.

Simon Pagenaud replaced Jimmie Johnson in the No. 48 Cadillac and was running third. Johnson batted leadoff for the No. 48 and ran two green-flag cycles before coming out.

“Although I did miss the fans being there, there was still a great energy,” Johnson said of the pre-race atmosphere on the starting grid. “Never had the honor to start this race before, so a lot of cool emotions.”

Other class leaders through two hours:

LMP2: Antonio Fuoco in the No. 47 Dallara.

LMP3: Rasmus Lindh in the No. 38 Ligier.

GT Le Mans: Tommy Milner in the No. 4 Corvette was neck-and-neck with James Calado in the No. 62 Ferarri.

GT Daytona: Ian James in the No. 23 Aston Martin.

The No. 31 Cadillac DPi that started up front remained there at t h e 1-hour mark of the Rolex 24. With Felipe Nasr behind the wheel, the Action Express car was maintaining a lead of about 4 seconds through the first round of pit stops.

Another Cadillac DPi, the No. 5 driven by Loic Duval, was batting for second place overall with the No. 01 Cadillac DPi driven by Renger van der Zande. Seven-time NASCAR champ Jimmie Johnson, leading off for the No. 48 Cadillac sister car of the leader, was running fifth after the first hour.

Other class leaders:

LMP2: Ben Keating in the No. 52 Oreca.

LMP 3: Jim Cox in the No. 91 Ligier.

GT Le Mans: Antonio Garcia in the No. 3 Corvette.

GT Daytona: Daniel Morad in the No. 28 Mercedes-AMG.

So much for taking your time.

Seconds after the green flag for the 59th Rolex 24 was displayed, mayhem ensued for the No. 79 Porsche, which was sent spinning in the middle of the field by the No. 25 BMW of Bruno Spengler.

Somehow, the rest of the pack missed Kevin Estre, but less than 10 minutes later he lost the back bumper of his Porsche, bringing out a full course yellow.

The No. 25 received a penalty for the incident. Estre is still in the pits even though the racing has resumed.

Rolex 24 At Daytona: Wayne Taylor Racing Acura Leads at Halfway Point

]

By Holly Cain

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – As expected, the tight contest for the overall lead of the Rolex 24 At Daytona was as spirited 12 hours into the famed IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season opener as it was at the drop of the green flag. And at the midpoint of the race, a familiar name was showing the way.

Filipe Albuquerque had the No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing/Konica Minolta Acura ARX-05 DPi out front, holding the No. 48 Action Express/Ally Racing Cadillac DPi-V.R and Mike Rockenfeller off by less than a second with Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kevin Magnussen and reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion Chase Elliott, in the pole-winning No. 31 Action Express Racing Cadillac, giving chase. The top five Daytona Prototype international (DPi) were still on the lead lap – within 40 seconds of the lead in one of the most competitive runs in Rolex 24 history.

The midpoint of the Rolex 24 also served as the second juncture for points to be awarded for the IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup that rewards top performers at designated stages of the four endurance races on the WeatherTech Championship schedule. The leaders after 12 hours were: the No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura in the DPi class; the No. 47 Cetilar Racing Dallara in Le Mans Prototype 2 (LMP2); the No. 74 Riley Motorsports Ligier JS P320 in the new Le Mans Prototype 3 (LMP3) class; the No. 4 Corvette Racing Chevrolet Corvette C8.R in GT Le Mans (GTLM); and the No. 57 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 in GT Daytona (GTD).

Flag-to-flag coverage of the iconic Rolex 24 continues throughout the night on the NBC Sports platforms. Tune in to the NBC Sports App until 6 a.m. ET. As daylight breaks in Daytona Beach, live coverage shifts to NBCSN from 6 a.m.-2 p.m. before the dramatic concluding hours are broadcast from 2-4 p.m. on NBC. The checkered flag will wave at about 3:40 p.m. The entire race streams on TrackPass on NBC Sports Gold.

After a spate of early full-course cautions – four in the race’s opening three hours – the drivers settled in and there were but two yellow flags over the next nine hours. Only three of the 49 entries – all in LMP2 – had retired from the race.

The following are other highlight notes from Hours 6-12, by class:

Daytona Prototype international: Johnson’s Midnight Special

Jimmie Johnson pulled a double stint in the No. 48 Ally Racing Cadillac just after midnight. Taking over the car after co-driver Kamui Kobayashi pushed it into the overall lead, the seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion held the point over his first fuel run but fell behind Renger van der Zande in the No. 01 Chip Ganassi Racing Cadillac on his second stint.

No. 5 Cadillac’s Night Turns Dark

The No. 5 Mustang Sampling/JDC-Miller MotorSports Cadillac, with Tristan Vautier aboard, fell from contention after tangling with Patrick Long in the No. 16 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3R GTD entry shortly before 1 a.m. The collision happened as the cars were about to head into the infield section of the road course.

The No. 5 had been on the lead lap all race long. Vautier immediately pulled the car behind the wall and into the garage, where it remained for nearly 90 minutes as the crew effected repairs. By then it was 47 laps off the pace.

Castroneves Savoring Short Championship Moment

It took Helio Castroneves more than two decades of professional racing to earn his first season title, coming in the 2020 WeatherTech Championship with Ricky Taylor. But now that he’s only slated to drive in one series race this year, the Rolex 24, the Brazilian is intent on enjoying the moment – no matter how short the duration.

“This is the first time that I come back as defending champ,” Castroneves said after his first race stint in the No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura he’s sharing with Taylor, Albuquerque and Alexander Rossi. “It was really cool. I was talking with Ricky about that. It’s a pretty good feeling.”

Taylor will carry that honor all year since he is a full-season driver in the No. 10. For Castroneves, this was his only opportunity since he returns to the IndyCar Series in April.

Le Mans Prototype 2: Cetilar Racing Sneaks into Class Lead

Cetilar Racing, fielding the only Dallara chassis in the LMP2 field, charged into the class lead following a restart from a full-course caution with 13.5 hours remaining. The No. 47 Cetilar entry, featuring four Italian drivers, lurked in the shadows in the earlier hours until shooting past the front-running No. 8 Tower Motorsport ORECA LMP2 07 and No. 11 WIN Autosport ORECA that had dominated to that point.

Le Mans Prototype 3: No. 6 Muehlner Motorsports America Charges Back to Lead

The comeback story of the first half of the race was the No. 6 Muehlner Motorsports America Duqueine M30-D08. After pitting with apparent suspension damage less than 20 minutes into the race, the No. 6 that started first in LMP3 dropped as many as four laps off the pace in class.

Co-drivers Moritz Kranz, Laurents Hoerr, Kenton Koch and Stevan McAleer methodically moved the No. 6 back into contention, taking the LMP3 lead by the seventh hour and contending with the No. 74 Ligier JS P320 for the class lead. After 12 hours, the No. 74 Ligier held the point over the No. 6 Muehlner Motorsports America entry.

GT Le Mans: Corvettes Continue Setting the Pace

Five GTLM cars remained on the lead lap after 12 hours, but it was the Corvette Racing duo doing the leading. The team is trying to get back to Victory Lane at the Rolex 24 for the first time since 2016 and give the Corvette C8.R its first endurance race win.

At the race’s midpoint, the No. 4 Corvette driven by Nick Tandy held 5.894-second lead over the No. 3 Corvette being driven by Jordan Taylor.

“It’s going fairly well so far, I would say,” said Alexander Sims, co-driver of the No. 4 Corvette that’s led most of the laps. “I had my first two stints in the Corvette at Daytona, and I feel like I’m learning a lot still. Those were the first two full stints I’ve done, and I learned a lot about the evolution of the car over that stint.

“So we’re at the front of the field. It may look like it’s all under control, but we’re pushing hard and not leaving much on the table. We’re in the right position at the moment.”

GT Daytona: Night Time Is Right Time for Mercedes-AMG

The long periods of green-flag running proved most beneficial for the Mercedes-AMG and Ferrari runners in GTD. The No. 21 AF Corse Ferrari 488 GT3 held strong to the class lead for a lengthy stretch, until the full-course caution with 13.5 hours to go.

On the restart, however, Maro Engel in the No. 57 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 and Mikael Grenier in the No. 75 Sun Energy 1 Mercedes quickly pulled ahead of the Ferrari and into the top two GTD spots. The battle for position remained tight between the two makes and Ferrari driver Daniel Serra was able to split the two Mercedes and move into second place just before the race’s midpoint.
