LBJ fares well overall at La Joya Tournament

]

Laredo boys’ basketball teams fared well at their first tournaments of the year this weekend.

LBJ is one of the hottest teams out of the Gateway City early this season as it split its last two games of the La Joya Tournament on Saturday.

The Wolves opened the final day of competition with a 58-56 win over Harlingen as Juan Navarro scored a game-high 20 points. Diego Benavides, who scored the game winning 3-pointer, followed with 16 points while Roger Leyendecker and James Cruz contributed nine and seven, respectively.

With the victory, LBJ advanced to the Gold Bracket consolation championship against McAllen Nikki Rowe. However, the Wolves lost in the title game 63-50. Navarro led LBJ in scoring once again with 11 points.

The Wolves (5-3) will return to the floor on Tuesday as they will play Edinburg Economedes in a 1 p.m. matchup.

LBJ wasn’t the only Gateway City team to play at the La Joya Tournament as United South and Cigarroa did as well.

The Panthers fell San Antonio TMI 55-45 in their first game on Saturday as Brandon Gonzalez led the way with 13 points. United South was scheduled to play in the event’s third-place game, but there was no update on how the team performed in that matchup at press time.

Cigarroa (1-5) took its lumps in La Joya as it dropped its last two games of the tournament. The Toros opened the final day of competition with a 71-44 loss to Corpus Christi Ray as Albert Moreno led with 18 points. They followed that defeat with a 65-37 loss to Eagle Pass. Cigarroa will play again at 2 p.m. Tuesday against McAllen Memorial at Texas A&M International University.

Nixon (3-3) dropped its final game of the San Antonio Spurs Showcase against John Paul II 51-47. The Mustangs went 2-3 at the event. They aim to get back to their winning ways as they are set to face McAllen at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Texas A&M International University.

Martin and United both were set to play at different tournaments in San Antonio Saturday. However, no updates were available at press time on how the two teams performed on the final day of competition.

Alexander and St. Augustine both were idle Saturday as they didn’t attend a tournament this weekend.
