Gucci Beloved Collection Pays Tribute to the House’s Iconic Bags
Creative director Alessandro Michele honours four of the heritage fashion house’s cherished bag icons – Dionysus, GG Marmont, Gucci Horsebit 1955 and Jackie 1961 – with the Gucci Beloved collection.
Elevated here in precious skins, each of these expressions distinguished with historic links evolve with a modern spirit in every new collection. Michele’s contemporary spin renews archival motifs and styles in pieces that defy passing seasons and trends.
“I truly love and adore my handbags,” Michele enthuses. “Perhaps they will always be my greatest love, my favourite accessory, It was therefore natural for me to call some of the ones I created ‘Beloved’. The name comes from my own personal experience and my love and my love for them.”
The Dionysus top-handle bag in snakeskin
At the heart of the Gucci Beloved Lines is the Dionysus, Michele’s first bag for Gucci that he introduced in his debut womenswear show for Autumn/Winter 2015. Fronting his vision of a vintage bag in tune with the times is a double tiger-head closure shaped in the form of a spur, an ode to the Greek god who, according to myth, crossed the river Tigris on a tiger sent to him by Zeus.
The GG Marmont shoulder bag in python
Presented for the first time in his womenswear collection for Pre-Fall 2016, the GG Marmont was inspired by a buckle that was used by Gucci in the ’70s, bearing the standout Double G hardware that is one of the house’s most recognisable symbols. Michele keeps his archival reprisal of the house’s initials fresh with a sleek three-dimensional iteration that is also offered in a twisted torchon form.

Synonymous with the brand, the horsebit’s famous double ring and bar design encapsulates Gucci’s rich equestrian heritage. It graces the Gucci Horsebit 1955 bag that first appeared in Michele’s Cruise 2020 collection as a reinterpretation of the shoulder-style shape, launched over six decades ago, for today’s customers.
The Jackie 1961 mini shoulder bag in ostrich
Re-emerging at the Autumn/Winter 2020 show, the Jackie 1961 is the latest release among the Gucci Beloved Lines. With its signature curved half-moon shape and piston closure, the hobo remains a timeless emblem of the glorious ’60s and ’70s jetset lifestyle synonymous with Gucci and the woman it is named after: former First Lady and style icon, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Michele’s manifestation brings a new mini size, a second strap that offers more ways to wear the bag, as well as a non-binary attitude for the new generation.
