Anthony Farrer Opens Up about the Struggles He Overcame to Establish Himself

]

Broken. Incarcerated. Helpless. Understanding the state of mind when one is at their lowest is still a mystery to many. While most continue to sink into a spiraling vortex, there are some who reinvent themselves and embark on a journey of self-discovery, fulfilment and impact. This is the story of Anthony William Farrer, now known as the Timepiece Gentleman. Anthony is today the proud owner of Gentleman Timepieces, a luxury wristwatch dealership, with a store in Dallas and a social media presence that is next to no one else in the industry.

But to truly appreciate his success and journey, it is necessary to take a trip down memory lane and see where this established entrepreneur is coming from. When we spoke to the delectable and charming gentleman recently, he was all but willing to let us into his world. “I grew up in Sherman, Texas with my twin brother in a foster home. In Sherman, life is almost like a cycle. You finish high school and if you’re not able to go to college out of town, you pick up a job at a local grocery store or join the family plumbing business or something like that,” he says.

“I knew I wanted more. I knew I needed to break off and do something bigger with my life and that’s how I found myself in Dallas after high school”, Anthony adds. He tells us how he took on several jobs, including working shifts at several night clubs, becoming a personal trainer, and even trying his hands on real estate. In the midst of all of these, he was getting sucked into the social scenes. He was drinking every other night and was arrested for a DUI after a heavy car chase as a teenager.

Anthony spent less than a year in prison, and when he got out, nothing really changed. As is the case with most people failing in life, he blamed everyone else and everything else but himself. “At some point I moved to Miami because I thought Dallas was the problem, but nothing really changed,” he notes. His life would go on to take a drastic turnaround when his brother was killed in an auto crash. He was riding a bike, drunk. At about this time, he was already on his way to prison for another DUI and would then miss the birth of his son.

“I was devastated by both events. I was practically driving under the influence every other night. I could’ve been killed too, but my twin was dead instead. And then I missed the birth of my son because of the stupid life I was living. I told myself it was over”, he says. After almost a year in prison, Anthony was released and had to live in a half-way home for a while. “Those months were instrumental to my life because they gave me an opportunity to really reflect and be innovative. But it was tough too.

“No one would give you a job because you’re an ex-convict. Besides, you’d only be available for work for half the hours they need you for every week. There was no work to do and I had lost everything when I went to prison. I didn’t have a college degree and I didn’t want to go back to the jobs I used to do because they’ll expose me further to the life I had chosen to give up”, he adds. It was from this pit that Anthony arose and worked to become the man that he is today.

He became a watch dealer after making a $500 profit from his first sale. He founded Gentleman Timepieces in 2017, serving as a link between people who wanted authentic preowned luxury wristwatches and those who had some to sell. That business has since grown to an 8-figure brand as the Timepiece Gentleman continues to exert his place and influence on the wristwatch ecosystem.

A Backyard Minimony Full of Modern Romance in Castro Valley, California

]

June Williams, a global tech policy advisor at Google, and Stuart Glenn, a senior development manager at Apple, first met back in 2007 in Washington, DC, at a barbecue. Ten years later, they’d find themselves both on the West Coast. June reached out to invite Stuart to a professional networking event, but found her future husband.

Stuart popped the question on a surprise trip to Maui in November of 2019 with an engagement ring by Zameer Kassam, and the couple set their wedding date: October 10, 2020. Little did they know that the world would change after sending their save the dates.

“COVID challenged us to ask ourselves whether we would even have a wedding anytime soon because the safety and health of our loved ones is our primary concern,” June says. “We really wanted to honor our wedding date despite the challenges that 2020 delivered. We decided that we should make the day special and celebrate love and life.”

Working with Lea Stafford, the couple put on a backyard wedding at their home in Castro Valley, California. The couple cut the guest list from 150 to 13—just immediate family—but kept plenty of personal details, like a focus on food and music. They maintained their mission of hiring vendors with businesses owned by Black women and people of color. June even managed to surprise Stuart during the reception by flying in his cousin to sing India Arie’s “Beautiful Surprise.” And hosting the wedding at home motivated the couple to finish their landscaping amid lockdown.

“It was the most beautiful backdrop to a magical day,” June says. “We spent most of quarantine between these walls, and it’s the place where we will make many memories together as husband and wife."

June admits the most stressful part of her COVID wedding planning was the guest list. They went from 150 to 13 guests, just parents and siblings, but it was after they had sent their save-the-dates. “We did not want to leave anyone out, but realized that we’d create a potentially risky event, unless we scaled down,” she adds.

“The dress symbolized the beginning of our union and I wanted to look back at pictures with pride,” June says of her beaded Essence of Australia gown. In fact, it was the first dress she tried on, and she liked it because it “was interesting from all angles.” She paired it with a long veil, since she had originally looked forward to a church wedding.

Since the couple initially planned for a black tie affair, they kept that dress code for their minimony. June’s bridesmaids wore dusty pink gowns from the Dessy Collection.

Stuart took inspiration for his look from James Bond, donning a classic Zegna tuxedo and a sweet gift from June: a Tissot Gentleman timepiece.

“When we started wedding planning in December 2019, it was important to us to celebrate and promote businesses with a social equity lens,’ June says of carefully choosing their wedding vendors. “We located some of the best in the business and also wanted to support Black women businesses and people of color.”

June and Start wrote their own vows, but shared them privately prior to the ceremony.

June and Stuart say that hosting the wedding at home was the best decision, and seeing the ceremony and reception décor—in their backyard—was one of their top three memories of the day.

To fit with their modern romance theme, the ceremony decor features two simple plexiglass pillars topped with arrangements of blush-hued blooms. Guests sat at French country chairs and the aisle included pink flower petals.

June’s father escorted her down the aisle as the couple’s DJ played “Fall for You” by Leela James.

Bishop Nathaniel A. Bullock presided over the traditional ceremony, where the couple exchanged rings and vowed “until death do us part.”

“We wanted our guests to forget that they were in a pandemic and receive VIP treatment for a day, make it a night to remember,” June says of the celebration.

For cocktail hour, the couple served their signature drink, Moscow Mules, alongside wines from the McBride Sisters Collection.

For the reception, guests sat at a long kings table covered with a lengthy floral garland. To make guests feel more comfortable with the arrangement, Lea Stafford spaced out the seats, set up a sanitizer station, and gave all guests a safety kit with a mask, hand wipes, and sanitizer.

“Since we were having a fall wedding with family, we leaned into comfort food in an elevated way,” June says of the meal. She and Stuart flew in Chef Brian Stansberry to design the menu, which included mini lobster rolls, shrimp and grits, bronzed salmon, and coq au vin.

Lambert Floral Studio designed all the flowers for the day, including the potted arrangements that decorated the couple’s deck.

The couple’s two-tier cake included a duo of flavors: lemon cake with strawberry filling on the bottom and chocolate dulce de leche on the top.

After the celebration, June and Stuart headed inside to their living room where they plopped on the couch to relax. “Stuart has poured his blood, sweat and tears into designing and renovating this home—and it was the most beautiful backdrop to a magical day,” June says. “It’s the place where we will make many memories together as husband and wife.”

Famously known as Timepiece Gentleman, Anthony William Farrer reveals his Luxury Brand Collection

]

They say nothing is new under the sun, and that is true to a large extent. What distinguishes one man or business from the rest is the approach and innovation adopted. When it comes to luxury wristwatches, one man is giving everyone else a run for their money. Known widely as the Timepiece Gentleman, Anthony William Farrer is not just a fast-growing figure in the luxury wristwatch circle, he is constantly surpassing expectations and building a brand that will stand the test of time.

Established in 2017, his startup Gentleman Timepieces is like a burgeoning tree, a super enclave and a hub for those trying to sell off used luxury watches and those trying to purchase the same. But what makes him special is his knack for excellence, his eye for detail and his undying passion for bridging the gap between the needs of watch lovers and collectors and the authentic products they desire. His venture took another positive turn in October 2018 after he met Marco Nicolini at an online dealer wholesale group. A few successful deals later, they decided to team up and have since forged a formidable partnership, growing in leaps and bounds with millions of dollars in sales to show for it.

Gentleman Timepieces deals in a wide array of wristwatch collections. Their speciality is in luxury timepieces and getting them onto the wrist of people who need them. If you want a pre-use Rolex, there’s no better dealer to go to than the Timepiece Gentleman. Other products include Patek, Omega, Piguet and several more can also be found on their shelves. A remarkable approach that has contributed to the success of their business is the extensive use of social media, especially YouTube. His YouTube channel, The Timepiece Gentleman is a beehive of rich information of both the industry and their business.

From the Q and As, Tips and Tutorials on identifying fake watches, to regular uploads of meets and transactions, there’s always something exciting to learn. Let’s take one video I find interesting. It begins like every other regular day until a homeless lady tries to sell him a Rolex, only to get the rear view of his Audi R8 smashed. It’s such everyday conversations and challenges; the humanistic nature and just how he records his everyday experiences in the business that has made him a trusted name in the industry.

Today, The Timepiece Gentleman has an amazing pool of 30,000 subscribers, with an average of 100,000 views per upload. In fact, every video records an average of 70,000 views after the first one week. This is how Anthony engages sellers, buyers and potential buyers; by taking them into the sincerity of his world and giving them an insight into the world of luxury wristwatches. Added to these bits of everyday goodness is a series of informative videos that teach viewers how to detect an authentic wristwatch from a fake. Take this one on the Rolex Mariner Hulk, for instance. Anthony teaches 22 things to look out for before buying the watch.

With a steady increase of followership and patronage, the Timepiece Gentleman has carved a niche for himself. Poised to give the luxury watch dealership industry a new look. And together with his partner, Marco, Anthony has built a million dollar watch business with a mission to grow into a hundred million dollar venture in the next three years. If there’s anything we can learn from this gentleman, it is that nothing is impossible.
