Gucci’s $190 ripped tights are somehow sold out — here are cheaper solutions

Well, this is distressing.

Somehow, luxury brand Gucci has not only been selling pre-ripped nylons for a whopping $190, but they are now sold out. The black tights have two massive runs in them, from calf to crotch, and yet they retail for more than one of the label’s perfumes or a Gucci logo bracelet.

The designer apparel and accessories site Ssense listed the tights before they sold out of their stock. The product description was as stark as the legs of the poor model, describing the tights as, “High-rise. Distressing throughout. Woven logo at elasticized waistband.”

“Distressing throughout” sounds about right.

It was only a matter of time before the internet caught wind and trolled the product for all its worth. Most notably, the Instagram account @dietprada posted the torn-up tights with the caption, “To whoever paid $190 for these @gucci pre-ripped tights… r u ok? #RippedInItaly.”

Twitter soon found out about this tattered trend and thought their own DIY approach would suffice, some even offering to do the ripping for a fee far less than the $190 Gucci was asking.

“I’ve been snagging my tights for free since I was 6 years old. Obviously I should have been charging,” wrote user Liz Dueweke.

As it turns out, Gucci isn’t the only one selling pairs of pre-snagged tights. Other brands are selling them for a less galling price — can’t guarantee that they were #RippedInItaly though.

If you looked at the Gucci pair and thought they needed more rips, these tights deliver.

From Walmart, these distressed tights come in a single pair or a pack of six for just $19.99.

“The ripped tights are unevenly ripped in the front and back, leaving the sides darker, for a slimming effect,” reads the site. “Great for Halloween parties, raves and much more! One size fits most up to size 12/14.”

These fishnet stocking feature rips in all shapes and sizes and they’re made to fit all shapes and sizes, too. These one-size-fits-all tights from Kikoroco (and available on Amazon) have more circular holes and the classic striped runs that will have them guessing just how long you’ve had these and how many cats have had their way with them.

These tights come in a single size, and one pair will set you back a modest nine bucks. If they aren’t your style, the product page suggests they make for a great gift for, “colleagues, friends and lover.” How nice!

It’s spooky season after all! Party City has you covered, or not covered, with their ripped tights.

“Our Ripped Tights show off your tough side!” reads the website. “These opaque black tights feature rips all up and down the back. Pull them on for a unique touch to your sexy Halloween costume!”

The site suggests you wear them on Halloween, but hey, we won’t judge.

If more boutique is what you’re looking for, Etsy shops are the best bet.

A shop called Agoraphobix specializes in all things Goth, with the appropriate tagline, “handmade with love for your dark soul.” They sell black face masks, upcycled denim, and of course, distressed tights in a few different colors and styles.

“I make these tights myself, lovingly dismantling, slashing cutting and reshaping them so you could have the best gams in town,” reads the product description.

Supporting small businesses never looked so spooky.

Rounding out the list is a suggestion straight from Twitter: Just cut them up yourself.

Amazon has a fan-favorite three-pack of tights, just in case you cut too much and need to try again. They come in black, off-black, nude and suntan and they’re available in three sizes. Grab a pair of scissors and see what happens.

After making headlines with its smock tartan dress aimed to ‘disrupt toxic male stereotypes’, Italian luxury brand Gucci is back in the news for selling “black distressed tights” for $190 or ₹14,167.

Popular social media handle, Diet Prada shared an Instagram post with the caption, “To whoever paid $190 for these @gucci pre-ripped tights… r u ok?”. However, it was the hashtag — #RippedInItaly — that cracked us up.

In September, the brand had also launched a blue denim line which sported fake grass stains, as part of its 2020 Fall/Winter collection for men. Priced at £600, the website mentioned that “this wide-leg denim pant is crafted from organic cotton specifically treated for a stained-like, distressed effect.” Know more about it here.
