People believe there’s something sinister behind Bella Hadid’s sudden ‘neutrality’ on Palestine
Model Bella Hadid appeared at the forefront of the tiny Hollywood fraternity vocal against the atrocities sanctioned by the Israeli state on the Palestinian people. She participated in a pro-Palestine protest in NYC — shouting slogans, Keffiyeh on her head, flag in her grip — and has been furiously posting about the human rights violations on social media. But a noticeable shift in her position has left fans stunned.
She posted a now deleted Instagram Story and tweet where she called for “peace, co-existence and equality”, with accompanying flags of the two states, Israel and Palestine.
This post is nothing out of the ordinary for ordinary Hollywood A-Listers who have been on the fence about calling Israel out, but Hadid is no ordinary A-Lister. She’s half Palestinian and has been vocal about the Israeli occupation of Palestine for years.
Her wishy washy post came three days after the Israeli state’s barely-not-a-parody official account on Twitter had called her out for her initial support. Hadid attended a protest in NYC where she and others present chanted “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free”, something residents of Israel (or at least the government of Israel’s Twitter account) believes to be anti-semitic. The tweet prompted further criticism of her from Israeli supporters.
Though Hadid has since deleted her “neutral” post, the post featuring her at the protest remain up on her Instagram account. “It’s free Palestine till Palestine is free!” she had said.
The sentiments she shared previously are noticeably disconnected with her latest post.
So, what’s really happening here?
Some social media users are speculating it has to do with Dior.
Hadid has been a long-term partner of Dior, appearing in multiple campaigns as the face of the brand and becoming one of its most recognisable brand ambassadors. After her support for Palestine made headlines and social media feeds, pro-Israel comments flooded Dior’s comment sections on Instagram. People began calling for a boycott of the brand for its perceived ‘anti-semitism’.
People believe this is reflective of some of the pressure Hadid might be under. Though a lot of people also rushed to the account to pledge their loyalty to the brand and supporting its choice of model.
We’re not saying her Dior deal is the reason for her neutral post but it’s indicative of the cost of supporting Palestine in the West. As we’re learning on Instagram and Twitter, Israeli supporters are deeply embedded in the world’s business elite and living in Pakistan, we are rather disconnected from what’s at stake for supporting Palestine in the West.
We’re not justifying Hadid’s sudden switch in stance (or maybe not since she deleted her posts), nor do we claim to know what happened. But people are suspicious about why one of Palestine’s most outspoken celebrity advocates suddenly changed her tune.
Others were done with celebrity activism.
This is definitely not the last we’re hearing of the matter. The Hadids are very outspoken about the situation in Palestine and we expect there will be more posts soon.

Namun kini, mengutip Images Dawn, Kamis (20/5/2021) dari unggahan terbaru Insta Story di akun Instagram dan Twitter pribadinya (yang sekarang sudah dihapus) sang supermodel tenar yang sebelumnya secara aktif mendukung Palestina, saat ini disebutkan lebih mengarah ke posisi netral.
“Peace, co-existence and equality,” tulis Bella lengkap dengan menyertakan emoji bendera Israel dan Palestina.
Unggahan teranyar adik kandung Gigi Hadid tersebut dinilai tidak selaras dengan sikap tegasnya yang sebelumnya mendukung Palestina. Hal ini membuat, sebagian netizen berspekulasi tindakan Bella tersebut ada hubungannya dengan kontraknya sebagai model rumah mode mewah dunia, Dior.
“Bella Hadid mengambil risiko kehilangan kontrak bernilai jutaan dolar,” bunyi cuitan salah satu netizen dengan akun bernama @Badg**hanx
Bella sendiri, diketahui memang telah lama menjadi wajah alias model dari Dior. Wajahnya muncul beberapa kampanye dan menjadi salah satu brand ambassadors Dior yang paling dikenal.
Tak heran, disebutkan lebih lanjut pasca-dukungannya untuk Palestina menjadi headline pemberitaan berbagai media dan viral di media sosial. Akun Instagram resmi Dior dibanjiri seruan pemboikotan oleh para netizen. Diyakini, tekanan inilah yang saat ini sedang dirasakan Bella.

Tak hanya di linimasa Instagram, di linimasa Twitter ada seorang netizen dengan akun bernama @Aba**zus menggungkapkan bahwa tekanan ancaman yang diduga dialami Bella, membuat sosok model kondang tersebut kini menjadi diam menutup mulut, kontrak kerja sebagai model termasuk dari Dior hilang, hingga diungkapnya alamat kediaman orang tua Bella hanya karena Bella melakukan aksi protes dan menyuarakan dukungannya terhadap Palestina.
“Bella Hadid dibungkam dengan ancaman kehilangan kontrak di rumah mode karena mendukung Palestina. Ini membuat saya marah," ujar cuitan sang netizen.

«Une tragédie humaine se déroule juste sous nos yeux», a-t-elle déploré sur son compte Instagram. Depuis près d’une semaine, Bella Hadid s’indigne sur le réseau social de la résurgence du conflit israélo-palestinien. Ces derniers jours, les violences se sont en effet intensifiées entre Israël et les organisations palestiniennes à Gaza, notamment le Hamas, donnant lieu à de multiples bombardements mutuels. Bella Hadid, fidèle aux origines de son père Mohamed, né à Nazareth avant de s’installer aux États-Unis, a décidé de prendre officiellement position en faveur de la Palestine.
“De la rivière à la mer”
Le mannequin de 24 ans a ainsi participé à une manifestation de soutien au territoire, organisée le dimanche 16 mai à New York. «Ce que mon cœur ressent… a-t-elle écrit en légende d’un post Instagram centré sur l’événement. Être entourée de tant de Palestiniens beaux, intelligents, respectueux, aimants, adorables et généreux en un seul endroit. (…) Nous sommes un peuple rare.» Un témoignage de soutien agrémenté d’une série de photos et vidéos du rassemblement, durant lequel la jeune femme scandait : «De la rivière à la mer, la Palestine sera libre».
L’indignation d’Israël
Bella Hadid a par ailleurs partagé de multiples stories de soutien au peuple palestinien sur Instagram. «On ne peut pas militer contre le racisme, les droits des LGBT et des femmes, condamner les régimes corrompus et violents, et d’autres injustices mais choisir d’ignorer la répression à l’encontre des Palestiniens», a-t-elle également soutenu dans un post publié le 12 mai. Avant d’ajouter, dans une autre publication : «Les générations futures regarderont en arrière, incrédules, et se demanderont comment nous avons pu laisser la souffrance des Palestiniens durer si longtemps.» Une prise de position qui n’a pas été du goût du gouvernement israélien. Le compte Twitter officiel du pays a ainsi fustigé et recadré, le dimanche 16 mai, l’engagement public du top-modèle.
«Lorsque des célébrités comme Bella Hadid militent pour jeter les Juifs à la mer, elles militent également pour l’élimination de l’État juif (…), peut-on lire dans le message. Honte à vous. Pour ceux d’entre vous qui ne le savent pas, la phrase “De la rivière à la mer, la Palestine sera libre” est utilisée par ceux qui militent pour l’élimination d’Israël.» Dans la même journée, Bella Hadid s’est défendue sur son compte Instagram, précisant qu’elle se prononçait depuis quatre ans en faveur de la libération de la Palestine.

“Il ne s’agit pas de haine”
«Cela a toujours été #freepalestine, a-t-elle écrit. TOUJOURS. J’ai beaucoup à dire à ce sujet, mais pour l’instant, lisez et informez-vous. Il ne s’agit pas de religion. Il ne s’agit pas de cracher de la haine sur l’un ou l’autre. Il s’agit de la colonisation israélienne, du nettoyage ethnique, de l’occupation militaire et de l’apartheid du peuple palestinien qui dure depuis des ANNÉES !» Le modèle a, en parallèle, rendu hommage à son histoire familiale à travers une série de clichés vintage. Un post agrémenté d’un plaidoyer tout aussi engagé : «J’aime ma famille, j’aime mon héritage, j’aime la Palestine», a-t-elle insisté. Avant de conclure : «Ils ne pourront jamais effacer notre histoire».
