Michael Hill Jewellers store in Pukekohe robbed twice in a year

The clean-up begins at a Michael Hill store in Auckland’s CBD after it was robbed overnight on April 23, 2021.

Counters have been smashed and jewellery has been taken in a second break-in over 12 months at a Michael Hill store in south Auckland’s Pukekohe.

The shop on King St was targeted about 12.30am on Monday. An employee said she received a phone call from security shortly after the incident, a team member met with police later that morning.

Police confirmed a quantity of jewellery was stolen by offenders who fled the scene afterward.

The first attack occurred in November last year, when two people were caught on camera robbing the store at 2.30am.

Three other Michael Hill stores have been robbed across Auckland in the past four months. Albany, Henderson and Queen St stores have all been targeted, and the most recent attack in Henderson saw up to $100,000 in jewellery stolen.

The Pukekohe store will be closed on Monday and Tuesday. Police are analysing CCTV footage in the Pukekohe area in a bid to identify the offenders.

Stuff has approached Michael Hill for comment on the spate of break-ins at the jewellery chain.

The Kerala state government on Saturday announced fresh relaxations of its Covid curbs including opening of electronic shops and permission for film shootings. However, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan emphasised that restrictions are still required in the state to control the pandemic situation.

At a press conference on Saturday, Vijayan announced the following relaxations on the basis of categories.

Category A areas consist of those regions where the test positivity rate is less than five per cent while category B areas are ones where the positivity rate is between five and ten per cent. In category C areas, the positivity rate is between 10 and 15 per cent. It is above 15 per cent in category D areas.

BAKRID CONCESSIONS

In light of Bakrid (Eid-ul-Azha) on July 21, shops selling textiles, footwear, jewellery, home appliances and electronic items as well as all types of repair shops and essential goods shops will be allowed to open on July 18, 19 and 20 from 7 am to 8 pm in category A, B and C areas.

In category D areas, these shops will be allowed to function only on July 19.

ELECTRONIC SHOPS

In category A and B areas, electronic shops and electronic repair shops will be allowed to open on all days from 7 am to 8 pm. These will be allowed on permitted days in other categories.

BEAUTY PARLOURS

Beauty parlors and barber shops will be allowed to function on days when other shops are permitted in A and B category areas. However, the owners have to ensure all staff members have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

PLACES OF WORSHIP

CM Vijayan stated that a maximum of 40 people will be allowed to enter places of worship on special occasions of celebration. The people in charge have to ensure that this maximum number is not crossed.

Those who want to visit places of worship have to have taken at least one dose of the vaccine.

The chief minister also said that the number of pilgrims who can participate in the prayers at Sabarimala has been increased from 5,000 to 10,000.

FILM SHOOTING

While shooting of TV serials has already been allowed in Kerala, now film shoots will also be permitted in category A and B areas with strict adherence to Covid protocol.

However, only those who have taken at least one dose of the vaccine will be allowed to participate.

NEGATIVE RT-PCR REPORT NOT MANDATORY

The government also said that negative RT-PCR test reports are no longer mandatory for inter-state travel and attending examinations for those who have received both doses of the vaccine.

All those attending activities that normally require a negative test report must carry their vaccination certificate showing they are completely vaccinated in order to be exempt from the RT-PCR requirement.

“However, those who have developed symptoms of Covid shall undergo an RT-PCR test and carry the negative result,” the government’s statement said.

ON VACCINATION

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday also stated that vaccines received from the Centre were being administered with minimal wastage in the state.

He said his government hopes to fully vaccinate 60-70 per cent of the state’s population within the next two to three months. Vijayan said that if everyone gets vaccinated and follows Covid protocol, “we can ride out the second wave and avoid the third wave of the virus."

Kerala registered 13,750 fresh Covid-19 cases in 24 hours on Saturday.
