How to Master an Effortless Smokey Eye the Dior Way

]

At Chateau Versailles Galerie des Glaces in Paris, Creative Director Maria Grazia Chiuri brought to life her Fall/Winter 2021 collection through a darkly sinister fashion film where various elements such as dance and sculpture came together to create a riveting thriller fashion fantasy. This sense of excessive dramatism was echoed throughout the entire film present in all the fine details, but especially in the makeup choices imagined by creative and image director of Dior Makeup, Peter Philips.

“It was about the relationship between yourself and your reflection, relationship between women amongst each other, relationship between a mother and a daughter or a daughter and a mother,” said Philips. “The reason we went for dark eyes for the girls and nude lips for the dancers was to really define the difference that visually, there were different worlds.” In the show’s 64 looks, Philips collaborated with Chiuri in developing makeup looks that reflected the presentation’s narrative while also creating something that could easily be adapted at home from the comfort of our own makeup bags.

Beginning with a fresh canvas, Philips prepared the skin with Dior’s Capture Totale Super Potent Serum with the powerful key ingredient longonza flower extracted from Dior’s gardens to revitalize the skin’s mother cells. Dior Rouge Universal Lip Balm was applied to soothe and soften the lips for added hydration in these colder months. Skin was kept minimal using a base coat of Dior Backstage Face and Body Primer topped with its sister Backstage Face and Body Foundation where needed. The skin was finished off with Dior’s brand new gel-based and talc-free powder all applied in rounded motions with Philips' designed Dior Backstage Buffing Brush inspired by the shape of Japanese spa brushes for a seamless smoothing effect.

With respect to today’s masked COVID-era, Philips draws particular attention to the eye in the show’s beauty looks. “You can see the inner corner and the outer corner are very intense. Once you open your eye, you have a full smoky eye. I did a smoky eye in a more elongated, horizontal shape, not in a round shape, I didn’t want an eye that seduces” said Philips. Opting for a punkish updated take on the classic sultry smoky eye, Philips and Chiuri modernized the style moving it away from its seductive origins. “It’s a very strong eye makeup without becoming gothic” he said.

Before applying color, Diorshow 24H Stylo in 091 Matte Black was rimmed around the eye for intensifying near the lash line. Using the house’s forthcoming shadow release Dior Mono Couleur Couture in #098 Black Bow Matte, Philips pressed the shadow into the inner and outer corners of the eye with sponge applicators creating a natural highlight in the center of the eye. “The great thing for that shape is that when you apply it with the eyes open you have a beautiful black smoky eye and once you change your position or blink you see the little highlight created by the natural skin tone” said Philips. Surprisingly, the entire look was done sans mascara, “once you use mascara on the smoky eye it becomes almost too sexy” said Philips.

For capturing the entire look at home, the pigmented high-performance formula will be offered on a presale featuring select shades of Dior Mono Couleur Couture, including the #098 Black Matte fresh off the runway from March 9 to March 14 on Dior’s website.

A larger collection of 21 Dior Mono Couleur Couture shades offered in five different finishes will be available in May alongside Dior Capture Totale Potent Eye Serum used in the show, which Philips notes models love the metal tip on this magic eye serum for ridding the skin of bloating and puffiness before applying makeup.

‘Dios, me encantaría’, contesté.
